The 2007 Metal/Non-Metal Mine Rescue Contest, sponsored by the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety; Mine Safety & Training Program and MSHA, was held on June 26th, 27th, & 28th, 2007 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds in Golden, Colorado. Eight mine rescue teams and seven first aid teams participated in the competition which was highlighted by a message from Ron W. Cattany, Director, of the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety at the Awards Banquet. The Division’s Mine Safety & Training Program Staff would like to congratulate all participants in the contest!

This year, the contest was dedicated to the memory of Larry G. Miller Jr., also known as “Rebel” in his wide circle of friends. We lost Larry on May 19th, 2007 in a tragic motorcycle accident near Belton, Missouri. During Larry’s 5 year stint with MSHA, he became very active in developing and coordinating the first aid and mine rescue parts of regional mine rescue contests. Larry will be greatly missed.

On behalf of the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety, the Colorado State Traveling Trophy was presented, posthumously to Larry Miller and his family. The trophy will be located at the MSHA Rocky Mountain District office in Denver, Colorado in his name. A plaque, which honors Larry’s dedication to the health and safety of this nation’s miners, was also sent to Larry’s wife, Vicki, and Larry’s family.
